Polyvalente Louis-Mailloux is located in Caraquet, a small and quiet coastal town of about 4,000 in northeastern New Brunswick. In this area, almost 100 percent of the population is French speaking. The province’s only French language daily newspaper, L'Acadie Nouvelle, is published here. Caraquet prides itself on its vibrant cultural tourism industry. In the summertime, locals and tourists go to the beach to swim or fish. They also enjoy the Village historique acadien, a unique historical reconstruction of a village portraying Acadian life from the 18th-20th centuries.
The Louis-Mailloux school is named for a 19th century local Acadian hero involved in defending minority education rights. Although cultural traditions and values are important, people here are excited about discovering and getting to know people from different cultures.
International students will experience a total French immersion at this school, which offers all the standard academic courses, as well as physical education, welding, carpentry, textiles and cooking.
It also features “mini-ateliers”, a series of short-term workshops, which may include, painting and dance classes. There is also a modern 300-seat amphitheatre, where students put on musical cabarets, theatre productions and other events.
The school’s mission is to empower students to succeed in an interactive environment where they feel they belong, and create a place for themselves within Acadian society.
