The Cité des Jeunes A.-M.-Sormany (CDJ) is the biggest high school in Northwestern New Brunswick, where 99% of the population is French speaking. It is located in Edmundston, a city of 16 000, where the state of Maine is just across the river and the province of Quebec is less than 20 km away. Forestry is one of the area’s major industries.
If you like skiing, snowboarding or other winter activities, this is the place to be. The Mont Farlagne ski hill is within city limits, and there are many cross-country skiing and skidoo trails. The city also has a modern sports complex, bicycle and walking trails, as well as several indoor arenas and outdoor skating rinks. Edmundston is host to many cultural activities, including an annual Jazz & Blues Festival, concerts and performances featuring theatre, dance and music of every genre. Adding to school activities, the community itself offers competitive figure skating opportunities, skiing, snowboarding and climbing clubs.
With 36 active committees, there is always something going on at the Cité des Jeunes. The school is known for its vitality, quality education, and cultural pride in its francophone identity. Students and staff are highly involved in both academic and extracurricular activities.
Committees include filmmaking, winter carnival, talent shows, photography, environment, music, style/design, performance arts, multimedia, radio, etc. Some, like the theatre, improvisation and chess committees, participate in regional and provincial competitions.
